Education & Work History – I have about 20 hours of Education coursework at the UIUC, in addition to my elective courses in German, Music, and History. But the bulk of my study was English and American Literature. I focused on studying each work in the historical context within which it was written. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in English Literature from UIUC (1994), I worked with troubled youth at Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana. I then left the professional work world to begin my family (1996). Eagerly pursuing alternative education methods with my own children, I have taught students privately for the past several years (2005 – present) in both group and 1:1 settings.
Current Pursuits – I am currently developing and implementing a private college-prep High School curriculum and a private Middle School IEP (low autism spectrum) curriculum for two of my students, in conjunction with courses offered in our local public schools. These curricula are very focused on reading, writing, and analysis across core subjects. I am also currently trained and pursuing certification as an Institute for Excellence in Writing instructor.
World View – I am a Bible-believing Christian and attend a local church. But the world and its people are a complicated organism, and require a complicated, flexible, humble response. I attempt to treat others with respect and grace, and expect my students to treat me and each other in a like manner. I maintain an attitude of as much religious and political openness as possible during our class discussions and tutoring sessions, for my own benefit, and the benefit of all participating. There is always something new to learn — a different and challenging way to see the world we live in.
Availability – I am currently available for private tutoring across all elementary subjects (Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science). For post-elementary levels, I provide tutoring in Language Arts development (which has values across curricula). But my afternoon and evening tutoring slots are filling up fast.
Current Courses Offered – I am beginning a series of High School level World History and World Literature courses.
sounds like something my daughter really needs. do you plan to teach different History courses each year? that is my main problem homeschooling…can’t find the right approach/books to teaching this subject!!
Laura –
I am planning on offering a four year series, following Susan Wise Bauer’s post-secondary books. We will go through one each year for history, and then read primary source material for literature. I am looking forward to her upcoming books.

I have enjoyed her history series for younger students, and look forward to this new series. Perhaps book 3 will be out by the time we need it? I hope so!
